sunflowers in Monferrato, Italy

Summer’s End, oil, 8 x10

In September, the fields of the Monferrato hills in the Piemonte region of Italy are thick with feed corn, grapes, and sunflowers, ready for harvest. I had almost given up on finding a field of sunflowers still in bloom when we took a different route home, turned a corner, and as if by magic, a golden field of sunflowers in full bloom appeared. The next morning I returned to spend the day painting and basking in the gilded beauty of that magic field.
